A standard monofocal lens gives you the ability to see at
one fixed distance.

Since this lens provides correction for distance vision, you are still going to require reading glasses for near and usually intermediate vision, especially if you are already experiencing presbyopia before cataract surgery.

Even if you still have near vision now, you are going to lose
the ability to see up close after surgery (the effect of presbyopia)
and will require the use of glasses.

An aspheric monofocal lens gives you the
ability to see at one fixed distance
(usually far).

However, the main benefit of this lens compared to the standard monofocal lens is improved contrast sensitivity. Contrast sensitivity enables you to see objects that do not stand out from their background; eg. seeing white on a light grey background.

Similar to the standard monofocal lens, this lens corrects vision at just one distance. There is no guarantee of near or intermediate vision, so you are still going to require reading glasses at some point, even if you have never had any previous vision difficulties.

A multifocal lens gives you the ability to see at
two fixed distances (near and far).

Due to their design, these lenses actually produce two images. This requires your brain to adapt and interpret several images, which can cause side effects and negatively affect the quality of both images, for near as well as distance vision. Your vision could be impacted by side effects such as halos, glare and low contrast sensitivity.

Additionally, since the focusing distances of a multifocal lens are static, you could experience limited flexibility. A fixed reading distance means you must always find the exact position, or “sweet spot” to hold materials in order to focus. Your intermediate vision could also be limited requiring the use of glasses.

The multifocal lens was actually the first generation of presbyopic lenses. The presbyopic lens evolved to make up for the limitations and vision difficulties experienced from the multifocal lens.
